Recital
A depiction of the 20th century
Ilija Tosic's debut album, "Recital: A Depiction of 20th Century," showcases the diverse repertoire of classical guitar during this pivotal period. Composers from various backgrounds and styles, including both guitarist and non-guitarist composers, contributed to its rich repertoire throughout the 20th century. The program begins with Berkeley's Sonatina Op.52, known for its melodic lyricism and harmonic sophistication, followed by Henze's Drei Tentos, three captivating guitar pieces blending tonal and atonal elements with finesse. Both pieces, dedicated to Julian Bream, are contrasted with Heinrich Albert's neoromantic Sonata No.1. The recital continues with two pieces written for Andreas Segovia, both featuring themes with variations. Tansman's Variations sur un theme du Scriabin creatively adapts Scriabin's piano theme of Prelude no.4 op.16, offering a diverse range of styles and technical challenges, while Tedesco's Capricho de Goya Nr XIII, No hubo Remedio, uses a theme of a Gregorian chant "Dies Irae" in a pasacaglia form. The album concludes on a Balkan traditional note with Bogdanović's 6 Balkan Miniatures, a mix of dances and improvisations that capture the essence of Balkan folk music through intricate melodies and rhythmic patterns, along with Macedonian Girl by Miroslav Tadić, inspired by the folk song "Makedonko devojce" a fusion of Macedonian musical heritage with modern guitar techniques and expression.
